Homework Assignment #1: "Burning Boy"

Part1- The image that is dominant throughout the poem would have to be the “burning boy” he is mentioned several times, including the ship deck he is on. The other image that is mentioned in the poem was the sailors that wanted to get back on the ship, but that image was not as dominant.
Part2- It seems like the boy is trying to talk to ship about whets happening or whets going on, he mentions that he tries to recite “the boy stood on the burning deck” I guess he was trying to tell the ship that he won’t let it sink. They use the word love a couple of times and that makes me think that the boy was in love with the ship and the people aboard. In the end of the poem it says that the sailors were out the burning ship but wanted to help the burning boy, but couldn’t.
Also the poem can mean that the boy had “burning” love for the ship and everyone on, and also that everyone on the ship loved him too. But when all of the sudden the ship catches on fire and begins to burn and the boy does not want to leave since he has a “burning” love for the ship. The sailors on the ship jump off for their safety, but they really want to help the boy that’s on there. The boy then catches on fire with the ship and begins to burn, while the sailors watch him sacrifice himself for something he loved.
I guess what this poem was trying to tell us that are we love something so much, we are not going to give it up easily, just take the “burning boy” as an example; he took his life for something that he really loved.
